Theodore of Mopsuestia

Theodore of Mopsuestia
(c. 350–428)
   Bishop and Theologian.
Theodore was born in Antioch and he was educated in Tarsus with John chrysostom. He was ordained in c. 383 and was consecrated Bishop of Mopsuestia in 392. He was a highly successful Bishop and it was only after his death, at the Council of Ephesus in 431, that his orthodoxy came to be questioned. nestorius had been one of his students and his works were attacked as heretical by cyril of alexandria. Subsequently they were condemned as part of the ‘Three Chapters’ of justinian and at the Second Council of Constantinople. Little of his controversial writing survives, but in his Disputations with Macedonians, he refuted the theology of Apollinarius. In recent years, it has been argued that his position on the incarnation was misunderstood.
